On Saturday Herne Bay FC's Over 50's walking football team entertained visitors from Surrey, Godalming Walking Football Club in the 2nd Round of the WFA National Over 50's Cup. It proved to be a very competitive match with both teams playing positive football, and having spells of dominance. Early on Herne Bay had the chance to take the lead through Neil Brown, but the Godalming goal keeper saved well. However after 7 minutes Herne Bay did take the lead through Danny Kimber with a good shot. The lead only lasted 5 minutes and Godalming squared things with a scrappy shot that alluded Chris Smith in the Herne Bay goal. On 14 minutes Herne Bay regained the lead, again through Danny Kimber, when he finished off a very good Herne Bay move with a positive finish. Just after that Phil Sainsbury went close to increasing Herne Bay's lead. Halftime came with the score 2 - 1 to Herne Bay.
The second half started as the first had ended with the play going end to end. Neil Davey had a great chance to score but his shot hit the crossbar and rebounded to safety. Then Neil Brown had a chance but again it was not taken. Shortly after Chris Smith had to make a smart save to avoid Godalming equalising for a second time. Then in the 32nd minute a shot from Neil Davey rebounded to Danny Kimber and he took the advantage to complete his hat trick with a crisp shot to make the score 3 - 1 to Herne Bay and offer them some breathing space. Thereafter Danny Kimber could have added to his tally and David Gilham had the goal at his mercy only to see his shot hit the post and rebound away. Herne Bay ran the clock down and came out deserving winners of what had been a very tight match.
Herne Bay squad: Chris Smith, Phil Sainsbury, Allan Baillie, Steve Snell, Neil Brown, Danny Kimber, David Gilham, Neil Davey, Kevin Marsh.
